Phyllis Nyawira Kennedy established AriseMama, drawing inspiration from her own upbringing. Due to her vulnerable circumstances at home, she was raised in a children’s home where she received love and support, which provided her with a solid Christian foundation. The acts of compassion she experienced profoundly influenced her, leading to the inception of AriseMama Iniative in early 2020. She holds the conviction that economically empowering women benefits the entire community. By assisting one woman at a time, the persistent cycle of poverty can be mitigated.
The 2019 research conducted by the Kenya Bureau of Statistics revealed that 32.4% of the 11.41 million households in Kenya were headed by women. This marks a significant shift from the traditional patriarchal society. The increase in female-headed households can be attributed to various factors, including joblessness, lack of relevant skills, high divorce rates, domestic violence, drought, cultural injustices, and political instability. Consequently, many women are compelled to raise their children single-handedly without any source of livelihood. Empowering these disadvantaged women economically is crucial. By doing so, they can meet the basic needs of their children, enroll them in schools, and support other vulnerable women. This empowerment helps break the cycle of poverty. We are committed to following the example of Jesus Christ by performing acts of mercy for the poor, one woman at a time.
AriseMama is a Christian charity organization based in Kenya, Africa, dedicated to economically empowering destitute women. Established in 2020, AriseMama was founded in response to the urgent economic needs of women adversely affected by the evolving global landscape.
The rise in pandemics, drought, social injustices, climate change, family disintegration, and gender violence, among other challenges, has led to significant social and economic strain on families. Unfortunately, women and children are often the most impacted.
At AriseMama we are committed to supporting these women in their journey to rise above these adversities.
